A mountain of fun: 2016 in review

2016 has been a very eventful year at the Cableway, with many new changes taking place. We'd like to thank every one of our visitors for their support, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Table Mountain in the new year.

For now, let's take a little wander down memory lane, and recall some of the highlights of the last 12 months ...

Big numbers

During the year the Cableway turned 87, we welcomed our 25-millionth visitor and our 50 000th Twitter follower!

Changing of the guard

Our previous managing director, Sabine Lehmann resigned in February, and our new MD, Wahida Parker started in June (by the way, she makes a mean chicken curry!)

Sustainability

We are proud to say that we have remained carbon neutral! After achieving this feat in 2015, our footprint has remained at zero. Here's how.

Connectivity

We revamped the upper section of the top station, and launched it as The Wi-Fi Lounge – and it continues to serve the best breakfast rolls around!

Playing host

We held some of our own events this year, like our supplier cocktail function, and a breakfast for our Cable Card holders. Other events took place on the mountain, and involved a lot more running! There was the K-Way Platteklip Challenge, and the Four Giants Challenge.

Special offers

At the start of Kidz Season, we hosted local mommy bloggers and had a fun morning finding treasure on top of Table Mountain.

Then, for the start of our Sunset Special, we asked for your best sunset photos, and we were blown away by the entries.

Special guests

A number of celebrities paid us a visit this year, from Kevin Hart to Buzz Aldrin – and the Cableway become a movie star in its own right, featuring in the upcoming Resident Evil film

A mystery guest

We were even visited by a very special guest who crept into our offices at night and left their paw prints everywhere!

New recruits

We launched our online recruitment drive in June and received hundreds of applications from hopefuls who wanted to join the Cableway team. We are glad to have welcomed a number of them to the family.

Annual maintenance

During our annual shutdown, we did some big revamps, replacing the Upper Station generator, servicing the main gearbox, and many other vital changes to ensure the highest international safety standards are constantly met.

Looking back

We celebrated the fifth anniversary of Table Mountain's inauguration as one of the New7Wonders of Nature!

Giving back

We hosted seniors from Noncedo Seniors Club on Mandela Day, donated a wheelchair and our old CCTV cameras to Marsh Memorial, and sponsored a collar for the Urban Caracal Project in our efforts to remain a socially responsible business.

Getting framed

We completed our seventh and final Table Mountain frame, and we continue to receive your photos taken at each and every one!

Plugging in

Along with Voicemap, we launched our second audio tour, giving visitors the opportunity to listen to audio commentary directly from their GPS-enabled mobile phones!

Recognition

Lastly, we were proud to win a New Generation award for the best online newsletter, and to be voted as the best South African attraction at the Cheapflights Travel Awards.

#TableMountain is the #CheapflightsAwardsSA Best Attraction winner
