It was only 15 months ago that Table Mountain Cableway celebrated the arrival of visitor number 21-million, but today we celebrated once again, as we welcomed the 22-millionth visitor through the gates.
Terche April (24), accompanied by visitor number 22-million-and-one Eugene Speak (31), was the lucky visitor.
The milestone came as a surprise to Terche, who was greeted by cheers from the Table Mountain staff and the flashes of photographers’ cameras.
Cableway MD Sabine Lehmann presented Terche with the honour, as well a number of other goodies that went with it, including a framed certificate, a T-shirt, complimentary tickets for the ride up and a hamper containing a Table Mountain Cableway Cable Card.
Terche, who grew up in Grassy Park and now lives in George, celebrates her birthday today and took advantage of Table Mountain Cableway’s birthday special – South African citizens with a valid ID book receive a free return cable car trip on their special day. It was also her first trip up the mountain – what a way to celebrate!
Visitor number records have been recorded since Table Mountain Cableway started operating on 4 October 1929. The Cableway recorded its millionth visitor in 1959, 30 years after it started operating.
Today’s milestone also marks the shortest time taken to reach a million visitors.
