Across the ocean and up in the sky
Members of a very special Cape to Rio team from Brazil took some time to explore the sights of Cape Town before their gruelling race across the Atlantic.
The team of youngsters are graduates of the Grael Project, a sailing outfit in Rio, and one of two crews that the City of Cape Town is sponsoring in the iconic race. The second team comprises local sailors from the Izivunguvungu Sailing School in Simon’s Town.
The Brazilian team’s commodore specifically asked his crew to make the Cableway trip in support of Table Mountain’s bid to be voted one of the New7Wonders of Nature – and to have the experience of a lifetime. The yachtsmen left the water far below them on January 11, with four days left to prepare for the race, but got to experience the vast ocean from a wide-angle perspective.
The racing fleet set off on Saturday, January 15, for Rio, where the South African youngsters from Izivunguvungu will be shown around the southern hemisphere’s other incredible destination. Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro share joie de vivre and much more, and hope to foster closer ties around tourism and cultural and economic activities.
