Celebrities on Table Mountain
When you press your nose against the glass of the cable car taking you up Table Mountain, remember that it’s entirely possible that an A-list schnozzle may once have pressed up against that very spot.
Cape Town is a top destination for the world’s rich and famous, and the cable car ride to the top of the mountain is sure to make it onto their must-do list. The cableway has carried Hollywood and Bollywood megastars, beauty pageant winners, sports stars, royalty, political bigwigs and business leaders from all across the globe, as well as any number of South African celebrities.
Illustrious visitors include British royalty King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II as well as Prince Andrew. Oprah Winfrey, Sting, Stefi Graf, Arnold Schwarzenneger and Magaret Thatcher have taken a cablecar to the top, as have Brooke Shields, Michael Buble, Tina Turner, Jackie Chan, Dolores O’Riordan, Ric Meulemans, Skunk Anansie, Paul Oakenfold, Micheal Schumacher and other big names.
Some may make the trip incognito, hidden under hats and Very Big Sunglasses, but others are instantly recognisable, like two of South Africa’s best-known rugby stars, Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck, who took to the Cableway together a year ago.
The two took a cable car to the summit during a publicity tour of 10 of Cape Town’s best-known attractions, in the build-up to the first-ever Cape Town Tens rugby tournament.
Skinstad said the tour was the perfect build-up to the Cape Town Tens tournament “as it was able to showcase to the media and our guests just why Cape Town is the premier destination in the world”.
With the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ on the horizon, there will doubtless be many famous footballers enjoying a cable car ride in Cape Town. Next time you go up, you might be virtually nose-to-nose with Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo or Beckham. You never know.
