Experts fly in from Switzerland for our annual maintenance

The Table Mountain Cableway will be closed for an extended period, from Monday 22 July to Sunday 25 August, while undergoing maintenance. In preparation for the shut-down, seven highly skilled experts, who form part of the maintenance team, will fly in from Switzerland.

The Cableway is required to do annual maintenance to meet the highest global cableway standards set by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways (BAV). However, the usual two-week closure has been extended to five weeks as the main DC (direct current) drive will be replaced by an AC (alternating current) drive. In addition, the mechanism that moves the cable car up and down the track ropes, will undergo a six-yearly overhaul, and the heel rope will be replaced.

Both cabins of the cable cars will be taken off the ropes and will be positioned at the Lower Cable Station for the crews to examine and work on them. This is the only time that both cable cars will be at the lower station at the same time. Additional work taking place includes comprehensive hydraulic testing and general maintenance.

“This is an exceptionally busy time for the technical team – we will be working closely with our Swiss colleagues so as to ensure our high safety standards are maintained,” says Andries de Vries, Table Mountain Cableway’s technical manager.

Visitors can take advantage of the Cableway specials that are on offer before and after the annual maintenance period. These include a free return ticket for adults on their birthday on presentation of a South African ID; and the Kidz Season special that offers two children under 18 years a free return trip if they are accompanied by a full paying adult (valid over weekends, public and school holidays until October 31, 2013).

Should your birthday fall within this closure period, you are entitled to redeem your complimentary birthday ride up the Cableway one week before (14 July-21 July) or one week after (26 August-2 September) annual maintenance. Remember to bring your South African ID document to claim your birthday ticket.

The Cableway operates weather permitting. For further information, call (021) 424 8181.
