Highlights of 2015
As we get ready to ring in the New Year, we're taking a moment to look back at some of the highlights of 2015 for the Cableway.
This year kicked off with a bang – we celebrated our 24-millionth visitor to the Cableway and set a new record. Other notable visitors included Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe, who was spotted hiking Table Mountain and Idols South Africa judge, Unathi Msengana – who made her way to the summit for the first time. Mr Monopoly was caught at one of our yellow frames and visited the mountain ahead of the Monopoly Cape Town launch as we are a featured destination on the board game. We also hosted a special party for the 100th birthday of the skydiving granny.
There have been great accolades for the Cableway and for Table Mountain. We were recognised as a runner-up in the African Responsible Tourism Awards at the World Travel Market Africa and named provincial Visitor Experience of the Year in the Lilizela Tourism Awards. Table Mountain Cableway was awarded Diamond Heritage status and were once again given a 2015 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. Finally, we scooped a silver New Generation Award for best corporate website.
Back home, Table Mountain continues to inspire photographers and videographers – and this year we reached 2 500 followers on Instagram. We hosted a #ResponsibleCableway Instawalk and ran a #HSPAtablemountain competition with Instagram South Africa and What's On. A blogger and a prominent Iger both compiled beautiful time-lapse videos – one in July and one in December – respectively.
The Cableway closed for its annual two-week maintenance and re-opened with our cable cars sporting a new look. We also celebrated our 86th birthday and Table Mountain's fourth anniversary as a New7Wonder of Nature.
And 2015 was a year of firsts for us, too. Our annual recruitment drive for seasonal staff went digital, we launched a free park-and-ride service, Sunset Special tickets are now available online and you can download a free Table Mountain audio tour.
