HBD Nelson Mandela ✊ A couple years ago, I had the honor and privilege of visiting the historic Robben Island where he was imprisoned for decades. It was a truly unforgettable experience. I’m so glad I read Mandela’s autobiography before my visit because the museum only shows a PG version of what the environment was. The prison cells varied in size based on the type of crime or based on your tenure/behavior as a prisoner. You can see some cells had an elevated cot while others just had a 1-inch thick mat on the floor. You can also see where the prison guard’s desk area looked like. I can’t even begin to describe the clothing and food rations they imposed. You gotta read the book (or listen to the audio book)! The torturous irony is the beautiful view of Table Mountain from the island... So close to home, yet still so far... the lesson I get from Mandela’s life is that even in the midst of what seems like an overwhelmingly helpless situation, you still have a choice on how to react - you can let the situation win, or continue to fight... and fight smartly. #nelsonmandela #whentheygolowwegohigh #robbenisland #tablemountain #southafrica
