This October, we are celebrating our commitment to assisting Cableway employees reach their full potential by providing opportunities to develop skills via our Siyafundisa Academy of Learning.

One of our proud academy graduates is Candice Steyn, from Athlone, who in 2016 was promoted to the position of financial accountant.

We sat down with Candice, a bubbly mom of two who loves long drives and weekend getaways, for a chat about her Cableway journey ...

You’re now the Cableway’s financial accountant. What is the one thing that has kept you here so long?

I enjoy the environment I work in. It is a nice, stable environment.

What does your day-to-day role involve?

My day-to-day duties are mostly the integrity of the general ledger, ensuring accurate recording and analysing of data. My main duties include preparation of monthly management accounts and ensuring I meet the required deadlines.

What motivated you to use the Cableway’s bursary programme to further your studies?

I didn't see myself [staying] in one position and decided to further my studies. My previous line manager motivated me to take the opportunity and make use of the Cableway's bursary, and that's when I decided to apply.

What was your first day at the Cableway like back in November 2003?

I was so excited to work at the Cableway because it was my first job immediately after my studies, but I was also very nervous and shy.

What are the most significant historical events at the Cableway that you have been a part of?

The most significant historical event was when Table Mountain was announced as one of the New7Wonders of Nature. We were all hyped up with excitement.

How has your perception of the Cableway changed over the years?

I believe change is good and for the past few years we’ve experienced a few changes within our department. I have learned to appreciate change and gain experience from it

What was your first position at the Cableway and how have the skills you learned in that position helped you get to where you are today?

I started as an admin assistant and was always willing to learn new things and help where I could. I then took over the creditors and cashbook clerk position, and was then promoted to assistant accountant. In April this year I was promoted to financial accountant.

What is your favourite thing/activity/outlet to do or visit at the Cableway?

Our offices are based at the Lower Cable Station and afford me access to the most beautiful sights. I always enjoy the cable car trip and its views once every few weeks.

Any advice for new recruits who are just starting their Cableway journey and how to make the most of the work experience?

A word of advice to new recruits is to never give up on your dreams or goals. It might sometimes feel as if you’re not getting there or it’s taking too long, but just hold on and focus on the end result. Nothing in life comes easy; you need to work hard and sacrifice to reap the benefits.
