A few months ago, we received an email from a dynamic group of young aspiring journalists who would be travelling to South Africa. They asked if they could come and enjoy our beloved mountain in June, and this past weekend we finally had the chance to meet them.

Youth Journalism International chose Cape Town as the venue to their annual conference, and on Sunday 29 June 2025 they popped in to see the Cableway and listen to interesting talks. The students listened to Steve Kretzman from West Cape News and Kristin Engel from Daily Maverick, who shared insights into the life of a journalist.

Most of the students had never been to Cape Town or to Table Mountain, and they were particularly excited to experience a ride in the cable cars. The weather was rather overcast by the time they got to the top, but that did not dampen their enthusiasm in the slightest. We organised a guided walk for them as they listened to the history of the mountain and a talk on the enormously vibrant natural richness that is on display at the top.

Judging by the smiles and the laughter, everyone had a fabulous day. We can’t wait to see these aspiring young journalists turn into thriving professionals one day, and we look forward to reading their stories.
