Africa represented at first New7Wonders inauguration

Table Mountain will be represented at the New7Wonders of Nature inauguration at the Princesa Underground River in the Philippines on Sunday, April 22, 2012.

Sabine Lehmann of the Table Mountain Official Supporters Committee, which spearheaded Table Mountain’s New7Wonders of Nature campaign, will attend the festivities that will be hosted by the President of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, and the Mayor of Puerto Princesa, Edward S Hagedorn.

Puerto Princesa is the first among the New7Wonders of Nature sites to be officially inaugurated. Table Mountain, the Amazon (South America), Halong Bay (Vietnam), Iguazu Falls (Argentina, Brazil), Jeju Island (Korea) and Komodo Island (Indonesia) were named on the provisional list of New7Wonders of Nature sites in November 2011, in Zurich, Switzerland.

However, the process to confirm the provisional results is still ongoing. Puerto Princesa Underground River, Halong Bay, Iguazu Falls and Jeju Island have received official confirmation, while news is being patiently awaited on the Amazon, Komodo Island and, of course, Table Mountain.

“Table Mountain is in the final stages of voting verification and, unless there are any changes, we hope to announce confirmation by May 2012 at the latest,” said Eamonn Fitzgerald, head of communications at the New7Wonders Foundation. “Upon confirmation, we will start planning for the official inauguration for Table Mountain, the New7Wonder of Nature chosen by voters globally to represent Africa.”
